A Libertarian Party Member’s Worst Nightmare

A Libertarian Party member’s worst nightmare would be if Social Security were to be declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Why? Because if this were to happen, the American people, who strongly support this system, would simply amend the Constitution to allow (or perhaps even mandate) such a system. The amendment would probably even mandate all kinds of transfer payments to individuals. My point is: talking about the Constitution is of limited usefulness when engaging in politics, since if a policy is extremely popular, the Constitution can always be amended. If you want smaller government, you must convince people to vote for it. Nothing beats having a good majority.

How did you survive in the LP with this clear thinking?

Compromising in the U.S. political system? Perhaps you are radical, after all ;)

The Radicals believe Reason magazine and the CATO Institute are too moderate and mainstream for heaven's sake.

If we want liberty, as opposed to just smaller government, we need to convince people of the virtue of nonaggression. Voting can be a form of aggression. The way to achieve liberty is not through electoral politics.

I would rather the Constitution be properly amended than simply ignored.

Take Prohibition for example; in 1920 it took an amendment to ban alcohol, and another one years later to repeal that ban.

Now look at our modern day, where the government can ban things like trans-fats, and regulate the amount of water a flush-toilet can use without any debate or accountability to the states or the average voter.
